The Challenge of Tropical Corrosion

Ghana's humid tropical climate accelerates corrosion in petroleum storage tanks significantly faster than temperate environments. High humidity, salt air near the coast, and temperature cycling create conditions that degrade tank coatings and base metal if not properly managed.

For operators running API 650-designed tanks, this means maintenance intervals must be calibrated to local conditions — not simply imported from international standards developed for different climates.

Inspection Frequency Under API 653

API 653 provides the framework for in-service inspection of storage tanks. Under this standard, inspection intervals are risk-based — accounting for operating history, corrosion rates, and remaining life calculations. In Ghana's tropical environment, we typically recommend more frequent internal inspections for tanks holding aggressive products or operating near the coastline.

Coating Selection

The right coating system is the primary defence against corrosion. For tanks in Ghana, epoxy-based systems with zinc-rich primers provide the best performance. Surface preparation to SA 2.5 is non-negotiable — coating applied over inadequate surface preparation will fail prematurely regardless of coating quality.
